The Organic Research Centre is looking to appoint a Researcher who will report to the Senior Researcher – Agroecology. The post will work primarily on the European project ‘Towards Eco-Energetic Communities’ (TWECOM) that aims todevelop short chain systems of harvesting biomass from existing landscape elements (e.g. hedgerows) for local energy use.  Research includes optimisation of the use of machinery and logistics for harvesting biomass from hedgerows, and evaluation of the impacts of the energetic use of hedgerows on their environmental and cultural values.  The post also involves working with the local community energy co-operative to establish a district woodfuel heating scheme on our farm near Newbury. The researcher will also contribute to a new European project (AGroFORestry that Will Advance Rural Development; AGFORWARD). In this project the post will set up and monitor participatory research with a range of stakeholders on silvoarable and silvopoultry farms as well as conducting policy and dissemination work.  The post will also support work within the rest of the Crops and Agroforestry programme including SOLID and CO-FREE for which full training will be given.

Candidates should be educated to degree level (at least 2.1) in Forestry/Agricultural/ Biological/Ecological or related sciences or have equivalent experience to this level.  Knowledge and experience of agroecological systems research is required and an understanding of the statistical basis of trial design and analysis would be an advantage.  An interest in the environment and organic farming is desirable.  Good communication skills, both oral and written are essential.  The ability to work alone and to contribute to the work of teams is also important.

The post will be based at our Elm Farm offices near Newbury in Berkshire where we offer a friendly working environment and diverse day-to-day work. Some UK and EU travel will be needed and an ability to drive is essential.
